On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" students protested the low admission rate of black students on campus.

The English newspaper, the Rand Daily Mail, reported that about 4 000 students of the University of Pretoria attended a mass meeting to discuss the limited admission of black students to the campus for the new year. The rowdy group were divided about the issue of admission, but agreed on two motions: the first being that black students be admitted but that the admission only be given on an interim basis and secondly, that a general referendum be held on campus to vote on the issue. The Vice-Rector addressed the students and explained that the University Council was pressured by the government to conditionally admit other races.
