On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" Tukshooligans wrecked a United Party meeting.
The local newspaper, the Rand Daily Mail, reported that United Party supporters ducked behind available cover as the lights went out and hundreds of chairs crashed through the air. It was the climax to a rowdy meeting at a school hall in the critical Rissik constituency. The newspaper explained that the National Party protesters –mainly students from the University of Pretoria – were clearly looking for trouble. The hooligans eventually dispersed, many shouting "Yea, Tuks!" (the war cry of Pretoria University). The police set a police dog on some of them when they surged into the hall again.
