On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" many students at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa were up in arms over rises in class and residence fees.
Professor Hamman, rector of UP, explained that class and residence fees would increase by 25 percent in 1981. Prof Hamman stated that the fee increase was unavoidable because of the high inflation rate and the increased salaries that had been authorized by the State for teaching staff. The university was also battling to cope with other increased costs, such as textbooks, laboratory equipment and other necessities.
