On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" local newspaper, the Pretoria News, reported on racial tension in UP residences.
The newspaper explained that UP’s residence initiation was set to stay, but that a group of students were looking into transforming campus residences after complaints of racial tension. The South African Human Rights Commission was asked to investigate racial tension in Tuks residences. Another reason for tension could be ascribed to the fact that although 22% of the residences were black, the house committees at the university’s 20 hostels were predominately white.
