A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 15 August 1997

Posted on May 22, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" SASCO (South African Students Congress) demanded the return to racially segregated residences at the University of Pretoria.

The Pretoria News reported that SASCO wanted separate accommodation because of racial violence. This followed claims of harassment by black students who stated that they had been called names by white students. The UP Dean of Students explained that these were isolated cases and that the university was working on finding a solution to the racial tensions.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
