On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" UP launched a law clinic on its Mamelodi Campus. This clinic operated as a branch of UP’s Law Clinic that was founded in 1981. This clinic is managed by an attorney, a secretary and four candidate attorneys.
As recorded in the personnel newsletter, Tukkievaria of January 2009, the role of the law clinic was to provide legal assistance for people from the community. The clinic mainly focused on civil matters including: family law, labor disputes and debt relief. Qualifying clients only had to pay a nominal fee. The funding for this clinic was made possible by donations received from UP as well as the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection that focuses on staff and staff activities, this includes copies of the Tukkievaria as featured here. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
