On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the book entitled Onderstepoort 1908–2008 was launched at the Onderstepoort Centenary Pan-African Veterinary Conference. This publication commemorates the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences centenary.

The publication was edited by Dr Daan Verwoerd and Dr Rudolph Bigalke and focuses on the historical development of Onderstepoort through the founding of the Veterinary Institute, the birth of the Faculty, its amalgamation as well as the history of the individual disciplines in the Faculty.  To book is richly illustrated and provides a wealth of information for students, agriculturalists, historians and animal lovers alike.  The authors contextualizes the history of the Veterinary Sciences and details the important role that UP’s scientists played in finding solutions to various animal diseases.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA houses the historical volumes on the history of the University as featured here. Onderstepoort 1908–2008 is available in the UP Archives reading room in the Old Arts building. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
