A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 30 September 2008

Posted on September 30, 2022

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" UP honored the dynasty of Queen Modjadji at the conference of the South African Society for Atmospheric Sciences (SASAS). UP’s Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology hosted the conference.

An article featured in the Tukkievaria explained that the theme of the conference was heritage and rain. In his tribute to the Modjadji, the Head of the Department, Prof Hannes Rautenbach, highlighted the important role played by the dynasty in making society aware of the “importance of weather and climate”. The UP’s Department of Geography, was founded in 1921 and in 1949 Meteorology was introduced as a subject  in the department. The Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology was formed in 2002 with the amalgamation of the former Department of Geography with the Meteorology component (with its mathematics and physics focus) from the Department of Geology, and the Geoinformatics component (with its computer science focus) from the Department of Town and Regional Planning. The department is the only one in southern Africa to offer degrees in Meteorology.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
