On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) awarded the Harvey Shacklock Gold medal to prof. Madeleine du Toit.
Prof Madeleine du Toit became the Head of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering Department in August 2008. She received the reward from the SAIW in recognition for her paper entitled “Failure of type 1.4003 welds due to intergranular stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion in the HAZ”. Du Toit was also recognized as an Exceptional Academic Achiever because of her research work in the field of metallurgy and welding engineering.
In 2008 the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering was the only independent department of its kind in South Africa. The department offers integrated undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, which spanned the full spectrum of metallurgy, including minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy and physical metallurgy.
