On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on the UP’s fundraising effort for the 1974 flood victims.
During 1974 major damage occurred when the Modder and Riet Rivers flooded. At Upington the Orange River flooded eighty percent of the houses on the island and along the river. In Cradock 200 homes were inundated. Personnel, including UP’s registrar, residences and individual students worked together to contributed to the national disaster fund. Three first year students also decided to ride with their bikes to Cape Town to raise more money for the victims. Students also contributed bikes and foods to assist the flooded regions.
