A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 23 May 1975

Posted on May 23, 2022

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on the popularity of karate on campus.

The newspaper noted that the Shokokai style was first introduced to UP.  In May 1975, Hugo Oliver, the creator of Karate-Do, introduced the Gorjie style to the campus. Olivier was a member of the world selection committee. In 1975 Tuks karate had 17 members, 5 of which were female students. Tukkie student, George Beetge was awarded with a black belt at the 1975 Karate-Do competition in 1975 in Potchefstroom. The newspaper encouraged all students, especially female students, to participate in the club training sessions.

The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection as well as earlier copies of the Senate, Council and Faculty minutes. We also have an extensive clipping collection in our holdings, as featured here. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection virtually.
