A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 14 April 1979

Posted on April 14, 2022

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the UP rowing team competed in the intervarsity rowing competition at Roodeplaatdam. This was the first time that UP could also enter a female rowing team.

The student newspaper, the Perdeby¸ reported that the Tukkie team competed against the Universities from Witwatersrand, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Rhodes and Natal. UP bought a new one-man boat as well as a two-man boat for this prestige competition. UP further hired some boats from the Roodeplaatdam boat club to allow all of its competitors to compete at the 1979 intervarsity competition. They further purchased a second hand four-man boat. UP also ordered a brand new four-man boat from Italy that was set to arrive on campus at the end of April 1979.

The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. We also have an extensive clipping collection in our holdings as featured here. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
