On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper the Perdeby reported on the growth of students numbers at UP in comparison with other tertiary institutions.

The newspaper reported that UP by now had 8467 students and 570 full time lectures. In contrast the University of Wisconsin the USA had 26 678 students and 1248 academic staff. At UP, like other tertiary institutions the number of females in comparisons with male students were also far lower. At UP there was one female for every five male students. Between 1951 and 1961 UP build a number of new buildings including the Chancellors Building, the Theology building, Musaion and Amphitheatre, Heavy Machinery laboratory and Engineering II. Since then the institution has grown and expanded to now include more than 53 000 students being taught across seven campuses.
