On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, the Perdeby, reported on the use of emoticon language.
The article explained that students are changing the face of text messaging. Emoticons have evolved into a new language complete with an unwritten manual. Lecturers from the Department of Visual Arts also noted that “the capacity of linguistic signs to be meaningful depends on their existence in a social context. Students explained that emoticons forms part of their personal style of texting.
