On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the students at the University of Pretoria founded a new club exclusively for female students. They named the club the “Tukkies Klets Klub” (TUKS Chat club).
The student newspaper, the Perdeby, reported that the club’s main aim was to teach ladies good communication skills. The club’s founding was recorded in a 1973 article and is featured above. This chat club also taught the students how to talk in front of an audience and how to fulfill the role of a guest speakers during functions and meetings. During the chat club’s meetings ladies were given the opportunity to present prepared speeches to their fellow club members. Members of the club could also attend a weekend away with the “Ingeneurs Students Sprekers Klub” (the public Speaking club for engineering students to further practice their public speaking skills.
The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. We also have an extensive clipping collection in our holdings as featured here. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
