On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" students at the university demanded, along with several other intuitions in South Africa, that tertiary education must be free.
In a 2015 Perdeby article, a week after the initial protest, a student recall the emotions and reasons for their demands. The students felt that that often the fees, study material and travel costs to tertiary institutions made it impossible to live. The protest at UP were mostly peaceful. It was accompanied by singing and lively discussions under the watchful eye of campus security and SAPS. After the protests entrance into campus became more restricted and monitored to ensure the safety of staff and students.
