On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, the Perdeby, reported on the success of Tukkie students on the athletic field.

At an interprovincial competition (featured in the article above) in October 1956, Tukkie athlete, Elfranco Malan, threw of 50 ft in the discus event. With this distance, the second furthest of the competition, Malan won himself a place in the South African Olympic team. In the shotput event Franco Malan and Hannes Botha represented Tukkies. Managing 48.8 ft and 44.10 ft consecutively they won second and third place at the competition.
