On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" focused on the rowing team’s performance at a fitness test. While the rowing club did not perform well on this day the athletes gained a lot of experience and improved their placing during the 1979 season.

According to an article, that appeared in Tukkie’s student newspaper the Perdeby and is featured above, the highlight of the season was the inter-varsity champion where the students competed against Wits, Ikeys, Natal and Rhodes. Overall the UP team ended fourth. Tukkie, Jo Schady not only came second in the inter-varsity but also ended second in the national championship. These races prepared UP well for subsequent competitions. In the next competition the four boat men team won the race on Roodeplaat dam. In 1979 UP also purchased a new rowing boat from Italy to improve their changes and also attended several training camps.
