On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" Tukkie’s student newspaper, the Perdeby reported on the success of the non-surgical artificial insemination of lions done at the Ukutula Conservation Centre and Biobank in North West.

Dr. Isable Callealta, from UP’s Department of Anatomy and Physiology highlighted, in the article, featured above, how important this study is. Dr. Calleata explained that the “reproduction techniques could provide not only a faster diversification and distribution of genetics, but also a reduction of disease transmission”. She emphasized that this study aimed to create a better understanding of the African lioness. It was hoped that the unit could create a “big-cat-model that could be used as a baseline for other endangered species, such as the tiger or leopard.”
