On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the newly refurbished Aula was opened.
This was, as detailed in UP’s history Ad destinatium V, a musical highlight of 2003. The Aula reopened with a production of Mozart’s Requiem K626, performed with overseas soloists, the University’s choirs and UPSO. The installation of the Bosman Street church organ in the Aula at this time ensured that this theatre again became a focal point of the performing arts in Pretoria. Another highlight in 2003 was the first recital in Gauteng of Haya Mntwan’Omkhulu (“Sing Princess”), performed under the baton of the Dutch conductor Arjan Tien, with the international award-winning South African soloist, Sibongile Khumalo in the newly refurbished Aula.
The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. The volumes of the University’s history captured in Ad Destinatium i-v, as featured here, also forms part of our collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
