When eating out, explained the 1974 article, it is important that the man takes the lead. First study the menu before starting a conversation. The man should place both the main and dessert order. Dry bread is eaten only with fingers and it is the responsibility of the waiter to remove the  plate in front of you- do not move it around the table. Use your cutlery from the outside inwards and place you knife and fork in an upside v form on the plate to indicate to the waiter that you are still busy eating. Dessert can be eaten with a fork or a fork and a spoon but never with a spoon alone. Ice cream is eaten with a spoon and a spoon and a biscuit in the left hand.
