On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" a fire started in one of the rooms at Curlitzia, the female residence on the Medical Campus.
In 2003, after substantial negotiations with the Gauteng Provincial Government, the existing accommodation for nurses next to the former Pretoria Academic Hospital was upgraded as the Curlitzia residence for female students of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The fire that started on Sunday evening on 6 August 2005 gutted most of the top floor of the residence and the damage was widespread. Following a temporary access ban on the residence and extensive cleaning, the residence was restored in the latter part of the year at a cost of R13 million.
The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. The volumes of the University’s history captured in Ad Destinatium i-v, as featured here, also forms part of our collection.
