On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the Prof TJ (Thanyani) Mariba was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
His appointed coincided with the official endorsement of the amalgamation of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry into the new Faculty of Health Sciences. The initial proposal was that this new faculty would consist of five schools, each headed by a chairperson. This was eventually amended to four schools.
The Dean was expected, in particular, to address the faculty specific challenges experienced at the external interfaces by the Faculty as a whole. As the former dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof DJ (Dion) du Plessis had already retired earlier in 2001, the previous Deputy Dean of the Faculty, Prof SV (Somarie) Grey, was appointed as Acting Dean on 1 March 2001 until the establishment of the new faculty and the appointment of Prof TJ Mariba in July 2001.
