This "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" was the last day of the International Arts and Reconciliation Festival and Conference which was held in the Sanlam Auditorium of the University of Pretoria from 14 to 30 March 2005.
Ten years after the launch of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Artists, musicians, scholars, journalists, theologians, film-makers and dancers joined together to redefine the meaning of reconciliation. They discussed the issues of healing and nation building, and celebrated forgiveness and reconciliation through the arts. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former president FW de Klerk served as patrons of the event and respectively delivered the opening and closing addresses of the conference. Prof PJ van der Merwe played a pivotal role as faculty coordinator of programmes in the development of modularised curricula and programmes from 2000 onwards.
The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and earlier copies of the senate, council and faculty minutes. The volumes of the University’s history captured in Ad Destinatium i-v, as featured here, also forms part of our collection.
