A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 27 March 1908

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the Transvaal University College (T.U.C) discussed the appointment of the first University secretary.

The council noted that the secretary had to be an expert typist, with shorthand qualifications and competent in English and Dutch. The secretary also had to sleep at the college and keep an eye on the male residents. On 15 April D. G. Hafner took this position. His worked primarily consisted of doing the necessary secretarial work for the Pretoria Centre, keeping minutes of the meetings, the supervision of students when not in class, and generally, under the direction of the chairman of the Pretoria Committee carrying on the administration of the Council's work at Pretoria. He also had to assist the professors with some clerical work and typewriting.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and histories of the university as recorded above. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
