The Nooitgedacht stud was bred from an Old Cape horse and a Basotho pony. A more focused breeding program was started in Ermelo after this breed was almost extinct

In 1981 Tuks had 25 of these horses. This breed is known to be hardy with a gentle personality. The Tukkie competitors won numerous prizes at the Pretoria Show. The horses also competed in an endurance from Pietersburg to Durban.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection as well as a complete print collection of the Perdeby (PDBY).
