Posted on February 23, 2024

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the House of Assembly of the then ZAR (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) accepted the education act of the republic, Act  nr 4 of 1874.

In this act, President Burger made provision for a higher eduction institution and even a rector. Altough the act was recalled in 1880 by the British, it formed the foundation for the tertiary sector in South Africa.

The University of Pretoria Archives have an extensive photo collection and histories of the university. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection.
