03 February 1970: On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" UP hosted a parent’s day concert in the Aula (Programme featured here) to welcome them onto campus.

The Aula (pictured above) was designed by Karel Jooste and completed in 1958. It cost £230 000 to build and could seat 1071 patrons. On open day and welcome day, the University typically welcomed thousands of students and their parents or guardians on its various campuses. In 2008 for example UP counted more than 20 000 students, parents and guardians who attended the open day event.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. The programmes, like the 1970 Aula programmed featured here, also forms part of our collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
