26 November 1949: End of year dance. On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” students ended the year with a formal dance function.

These functions were part of the UP's social calender since it's inception. Dances gave students a change to dress up, mingle with the opposite sex and try out social dance moves to a live band. The musicians played the popular tunes of the time as heard on the radio and record players. In 1949 Pretoria students, along with the rest of South African, danced to the Samba, Rhumba, Swing, Salsa. The Waltz, Tango and especially the Foxtrot were also popular choices.
The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We also have an extensive photo and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
