21 November 1975: New rules for first year initiation ceremonies. On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” the South African government announced a number of rules regarding the “welcoming activities” in student residences.

The student newspaper, Die Perdeby, published a detailed feature on what was agreed between the government, UP’s rector and the student council. This article is featured above. The minister announced that physical exercises during these ceremonies are prohibited and all activities had to be monitored. Body contact and performing tasks of a personal nature for senior students were not allowed. Government further stated that waking first year outside of normal sleeping hours, mocking students and acts of psychological intimidation will no longer be tolerated. The initiation period were also shortened to allow students to focus on their studies.
