19 November 2020: University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) hosted it’s 24th Advisory committee meeting. On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” the UPA held its annual committee meeting.
In 1994, UP registrar, PR C.R de Beer established a task group to investigate the archives management policy at the University. The task group recommended, that the preservation and arrangement of university archival material must be carried out in a central archive. These recommendations were approved on 13 September 1994 by the Management of the University and this date can thus be regarded as the founding date. The position of University Archivist became possible after the Department of History and Cultural History consented to allow 50% professorship for this purpose. An Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of the Registrar, determines the policy of the Archives and serves as an advisory body for matters relating to the archives. The committee convenes once a year in November. It’s members include the Registrar, UP archivist, Director of Library Services, Director of Institutional Advancement, Director of Facilities Management, Student Council Representative, Head of Historical and Heritage Studies, Director of IT and the South African National Archivist.
