12 November 1977: Jolly Oscar evening. On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” South Africa’s best actors, actresses, directors and cameramen, watched the local films that were shown at the recent Cannes festival. Tukkie’s Rag committee convenor, Willem Coetzer initiated this South African first (see article above). The event was marketed and financed by the daily newspaper Rapport, while UP’s Rag queen handed over the prizes. Students and staff could attend the function, held at the Kine centre in Johannesburg, by paying a R5 entrance fee.

The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We also have an extensive photo and clipping collection. Please contact us  on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or access our collection virtually.
