11 November 2010: Strengthening medical training in Africa. On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” the School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH) published a study in the prestigious medical journal Lancet.

Prof Eric Buch (pictured above), the Acting Chairperson from the SHSPH explained that the faculty was selected as the African partner in a survey of sub- Saharan African medical schools. The study was led by a team from George Washington University and funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation… “The survey provided an evidence-based understanding of the current status, trends, capacity-building needs and retention opportunities of African medical schools, gathering information from the deans or their nominees from 105 medical schools (with a 70% response rate). It provided valuable information for efforts to strengthen and upscale medical training capacity in Africa. The track also provided the scientific lead for the Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) in Africa’s INCODEV project, funded by the European Union. This looked at the impact of GHIs in Africa and emerged with a number of recommendations to advance health programmes on the continent. Other contract research was also performed, such as a study on medical scheme boards for the Medical Schemes Council.”
