20 October 1972: Jacaranda Marathon. On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on UP’s running club’s success at the distance race.

The article (featured above) explained that 44 competitors competed in this gruelling marathon. It started on the L.C. de Villiers sports ground. The Wits winner, Brian Chamberlain, commented after the race that: “It was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed it very much. It was not everybody’s race, but that made it more interesting. The view from the top over Pretoria was terrific.” The UP runners won the team competition.
