11 September 1974: UP flag with new design hoisted for the first time. On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" Prof. E. Hamman hoisted the flag for the first time at the occasion of spring day festivities in front of the Old Arts Building (pictured below).

Since 1974 the flag has been hoisted on the university grounds every working day. The design consists of two horizontal planes of blue (top) and red (bottom), and the university shield ringed with gold in the middle. On a fine day a bigger flag (180cm x 130cm) is hoisted and during bad weather a smaller flag (91cm x 61 cm) is used.
