The Department of Tourism Management

Posted on August 10, 2012

In meeting these objectives and to strengthen the management focus of the BCom degree in Tourism Management, the current first-year modules in Tourism Management (TBE 110 and 120) will, as from 2013, no longer be offered. All students will be required to do Marketing Management (BEM 110 and 122) as a prerequisite for the second year in Tourism Management (TBE 210). The adjusted course content for Tourism Management will provide students with a deepened knowledge of the management of tourism and its distinctive and specialised nature as a scientific discipline. These changes will enhance the opportunities for students to undertake postgraduate studies in Tourism Management up to a PhD level.

As from 2013, the Department of Tourism Management will be restructured as a division of the Department of Marketing Management to better support its management focus, as well as to deliver management graduates to the tourism industry and fill the gaps with innovative and resourceful leaders.

Research within the current Department of Tourism Management has also been significantly strengthened with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding with South African National Parks (SANParks) and the National Department of Tourism (NDT). These relationships will be enhanced and strengthened with the alignment of Tourism Management and the Department of Marketing Management.

The overall approach to Tourism Management as presented at the University of Pretoria remains its advancement as a research discipline. With international partners such as Oulu University in Finland, the NHTV University in Holland, Bremen University in Germany, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Science in Finland and North Carolina State University in the USA, UP continues to strive towards retaining its status as one of the leading tertiary institutions in South Africa.

Tourism Management graduates are also provided with entry-level skills to enhance their opportunities in the industry. These include vocational courses such as Ticketing & Fares, Galileo and Fidelio Opera Front Office.
