Tourism Management contributes to saving the rhino in South Africa

Posted on April 09, 2014

The purpose of these events was to create an awareness of rhino poaching amongst students and to contribute to the conservation of the South African rhino. The money raised from the sale of these ceramic rhinos, donations and the silent auction amounted to R7 140. During an event in March 2014, Prof Berendien Lubbe, Head of the Division, handed over the money to representatives from Olienhout men's residence to add to their Save the Rhino Fund.

The master mind behind this initiative was Prof Felicite Fairer-Wessels, a staff member in the Division. She once visited an elephant rehabilitation centre in Thailand where painted ceramic elephants were sold to further funds for the centre. She decided to do the same for rhinos in South Africa.
