Student success

At the University of Pretoria, we seek to provide an environment where students can succeed and flourish. For this reason, the university is fully committed to supporting and assisting students and eliminating obstacles to success.

However, it is important that students also take responsibility for their studies and career development. To provide a supportive educational environment, quality teaching and learning tools and opportunities are available to students, which they can actively engage with to gain knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values in a specific discipline.

The UP Readiness Survey

To measure students’ readiness for university education, a student’s level of preparation to succeed at a higher education institution is measured beforehand. By assessing critical areas such as social, academic, financial, and engagement, the results of the UP Readiness Survey are used to identify first-time, first-year students for mentorship programmes or academic advising.

Students who are undergoing financial distress, accommodation challenges, connectivity issues, or have a recognised disability can be receive the needed support.

High Impact Modules Project (HIMs)

Achieving the highest success rate possible for module pass rates is a priority at the University of Pretoria. For modules experiencing lower pass rates, the HIMs project pinpoints critical areas that require support and access to available resources.

In partnership with the Department for Education Innovation, module reviews are conducted with a team- and data-based approach through its data analytics team, instructional designers, educational consultants, and tutoring support.

The University of Pretoria’s tutoring programme

The University of Pretoria maintains a comprehensive tutoring programme that enhances student academic achievement. All tutors have completed a four-hour online training course, which covers five essential themes: Introduction to Tutoring, Tutoring for Learning in Higher Education, Exploring Tutorial Spaces, Knowing Your Students, and Evaluating Tutorial Practice

A proactive tutoring model

The University of Pretoria employs a comprehensive data analytics strategy to promote student success through early identification of at-risk students. Based on insights into learning and teaching analytics, evidence-based decisions are made that enhance both student outcomes and instructional effectiveness.

This proactive approach enables the university to make timely interventions through tutoring and advising services. Students are supported with scalable, personalised learning experiences, and lecturers can refine their teaching methods, develop targeted interventions, and optimise resource allocation to enhance course-level student success.
