Call for applications: Dr Farai Maunganidze Memorial Registration Bursary

Posted on September 07, 2024

Dr Farai Maunganidze completed his PhD in Human Resources Management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2016 with a thesis titled The Changing Nature of Professional Work in Zimbabwe. A Multiple Case Study of Engineers, Chartered Accountants and Lawyers. Following the completion of his PhD, he took up a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pretoria between July 2017 and July 2019 where he worked on Socio-cultural factors affecting the entrance of women into legal practice: a case of Zimbabwean female lawyers. At the end of his fellowship, he was appointed a Research Associate in the Department, a position he held (alongside his substantive position as a Senior Lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University) until his death in July 2024. In these positions, he contributed a rich theoretical and critical body of intellectual work focusing on the professions and issues of discrimination and equality in the workplace, with an emphasis on women.

Beyond his academic interests, Dr Maunganidze was passionate about, and an active advocate for the rights and social justice of persons living with albinism, a condition he had and also had a research interest in. At the time of his death, he was the Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Albino Association.

Staff, students and peers in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pretoria remember him as an amazing academic, prolific researcher and, overall, a wonderful human being always cheerful and with a great sense of humour.

To honour his remarkable legacy the Department of Sociology has set up the Dr Farai Maunganidze's Memorial Registration Bursary, which intends to cover the registration fees of Masters and PhD students whose research interests align with and advance those that Dr Maunganidze was passionate about.
