Dr. Justice M. Medzani (2019), a recent graduate from the Department of Sociology, UP, was on a five-month study visit aligned with the Humboldt Global Studies Programme. He was based at Humboldt University, Berlin. His doctoral study was an exploration of the nexus between gender and violence. The title of his dissertation is "Intimate partner abuse and male identity: Experiences and perspectives of abused men in Zimbabwe".

Pfarelo Matsila (2019), a doctoral candidate, was on a five-month study visit aligned with the Humboldt Global Studies Programme. She was based at Humboldt University, Berlin. Her master's study was a qualitative exploration of the constructions of femininity and how the relationship between mothers and their daughters served as a critical site in which Black women (particularly from the rural Venda area in northern South Africa) constructed their identities. The mini-dissertation is titled "Intergenerational constructions of black feminine identity: Mother-daughter narratives". Pfarelo was awarded her MSocSci (Sociology) Cum Laude.
