UP sociology professor elected Vice-President of international research committee

Posted on August 22, 2016

At the recent International Sociology Association (ISA) Forum in Vienna, Austria, Professor Debby Bonnin, from the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Humanities, was elected the Vice-President of the Research Committee on Sociology of Professional Groups (RC52). RC52 is one of the fifty-six research committees of the International Sociological Association through which it carries out its scientific activities.

Prof Bonnin was first elected to the Board of RC52 following the ISA World Congress in Yokohama, Japan, in 2014 and since 2015 she has been responsible for the RC52 newsletter. The term of office will last until the 2018 World Congress in Toronto, Canada.

RC52 is very active within the ISA. At the 2017 Vienna Forum it organised 17 sessions comprising 81 oral presentations and 43 distributed papers covering a wide variety of topics within the Sociology of Professions. Between the ISA World Congresses and Forum meetings, RC52 holds annual conferences at which members may present their research papers – the next being in Oslo, Norway, in June 2017.

Prof Bonnin is well qualified to contribute to the Board, having recently concluded work examining emerging trends in professions in South Africa (published in The Routledge Companion to the Professions and Professionalism, edited by Dent, Bourgeault, Denis and Kuhlmann). At the ISA Forum, she, together with colleague Dr Shaun Ruggunan, presented a paper that examined new developments in the regulation of the accounting profession in South Africa. She has also contributed to the ongoing RC52-initiated dialogue on 'Professions in world perspective', intended to spark a revision of existing theoretical approaches to the study of professions. She hopes to use her position to extend the RC52 network within Southern Africa.
