Call for Papers: Colloquium: Solidarity as Sovereign Responsibility 25 – 26 October 2022, University of Pretoria.

In the era of growing wicked problems facing the world, due to among several issues such as the alienation brought about by global capitalism, the need for solidarity has never been so urgent. This call invites papers that address the theme of solidarity in multifaceted ways and which engage solidarity as sovereign responsibility. Papers are sought that reflect on solidarity as a construct of the interplay of order and a surplus or general economy that order presupposes. Consequently, sovereignty is central to the manner in which this call envisages discussions about solidarity. However, as might be evident, the understanding of sovereignty presupposed by this call extends conversation about sovereignty beyond the concern with the nation state and to relationships that may be considered to transcend the centrality and priority given to the nation state in modernity. This call takes seriously the surplus or general economy that order always already presupposes. The priority of this surplus or general economy to order locates discussions about solidarity beyond sovereignty as a construct of the nation state. Emerging from this perspective, solidarity directs our attention to others and the world as what comes before and in need of our response and action.
