Medical Physics
Medical Physics is an integral part of Radiation Oncology. All aspects of machine installation, calibration, commissioning and quality assurance are some of the duties undertaken by medical physicists. The medical physics department is involved in both clinical and academic duties – including training of registrars, radiotherapists and physicist interns.

A radiation therapist, therapeutic radiographer or radiotherapist is an allied health professional who works in the field of radiation oncology.

Radiation therapy radiographer training in conjunction with the University of Pretoria
The Department of Radiation Oncology is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa to offer work-integrated learning (clinical) training practice in conjunction with the University of Pretoria, to professionals who wish to obtain basic and advanced qualifications in the field of
Radiography: Radiation Therapy. Radiation Therapist are responsible for the treatment planning
processes, treatment delivery and care of the patient who is undergoing radiation therapy. The
training is offered in the Bachelor of Radiography (Honours): Radiation Therapy programme for
radiographers who hold an undergraduate degree in Radiography: Diagnostic or Radiation Therapy.
The department further offers research opportunities and support for Radiation Therapists wishing
to obtain qualifications in the Masters in Radiation Therapy and Doctor of Philosophy in Radiation
Therapy.

Radiation therapy programmes offered through the University of Pretoria:
1. Bachelor in Radiography (Honours): Radiation Therapy (for candidates with an undergraduate
degree in Radiography and studying in Radiation Therapy for the first time)
2. Bachelor in Radiography (Honours): Radiation Therapy (for the professional development of
candidates who have an undergraduate 3-year degree in Radiation Therapy)
3. Masters of Radiography: Radiation Therapy
4. Doctor of Philosophy: Radiography
Research focus area: Integrative approaches to supporting patients diagnosed with cancer being
managed in the public health sector in South Africa.
Oncology Nursing
Sister Maria Thseletsane is the Unit Head of radiation oncology Nursing. She oversees a team comprising registered professional nurses and staff nurses. Her team assists with the day to day running of the clinic and providing an essential service to the department including administration of weekly chemotherapy, wound care, preparation and monitoring of patients for brachytherapy and anaesthesia for our young patients.
