Ms DS Nkandeu Tatchum is a PhD candidate at the Department of Physiology, University of Pretoria. She has dedicated her young research career to identifying cancer biomarkers and novel chemotherapeutic strategies that will improve the currently available cancer therapies. Her PhD research is focused on the effects of combining kynurenine metabolites and a chemokine receptor antagonist CTCE-9908 and on cell viability and tumour adhesion in melanoma and endothelioma cells lines and on murine models. Additionally, the research has resulted in peer-reviewed original scientific publications and presentations at various scientific conferences, both locally and internationally. Her research has garnered invitations to present at national and international conferences. She was invited to be a guest speaker at the Global Virtual Summit on Food Science and Nutrition on her published review article on the involvement of a chemokine receptor antagonist CTCE-9908 and kynurenine metabolites in cancer development. She was also a recipient of the International Society for Tryptophan Research (ISTRY) travel award in Jena, Germany, where she presented her research on The in vitro effect of kynurenine metabolites on endothelioma cells and the in vivo effect of L-kynurenine and CTCE-9908 in C57BL/6 mice. Following the ISTRY conference, she was selected to be part of the ISTRY media team, and her responsibilities included planning online webinars and writing the newsletter. She received the University Capacity Development Programme (UCDP) grant awarded by the Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) at the University of Pretoria.
