Flow cytometry training workshop for post-graduates in Physiology

Posted on April 07, 2014

This workshop was arranged by Dr Joji Theron from the Department of Physiology and presented by Gert Swanepoel and Lita Clifford from Beckman Coulter at the Prinshof campus in the Pharmacology Department. Mrs Janette Bester and Ms Thandi Mqoco from the Department of Physiology assisted with the logistical arrangements. Dr Rivak Punchoo, Ms Rustelle Janse van Vuuren, Ms Elsa Nolte and Ms Marcel Verwey (all students supervised by Prof Joubert and Dr Theron) received hands-on-training in flow-cytometry software methodology and setting up their research protocols. This input will improve the quality of their research designs and contributes to obtaining significant and high quality publishable data. Additionally, they were taught instrument maintenance, quality assurance and troubleshooting skills. All participants found the training empowering as it significantly improved their skill set, laboratory practice skills and overall marketability in the competitive job market. Based on the success of this workshop, Beckman Coulter has committed to provide this training annually to the students enrolled in the Molecular Physiology Honours programme.
