The Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine has a staff establishment of 4 full-time and 3 part-time specialists, and 5 registrars; and has sufficient support-staff, and adequately up-to-date equipment and teaching facilities.
Our vision is to have the satisfaction of having spared no pains in striving to fulfil the core duties and responsibilities of the academic/clinical department, which include:
- education and instruction/training of undergraduates and postgraduates/registrars at the highest possible level, through the committed, communally motivated efforts of all academic/clinical and support staff.
- clinical service rendering in parallel with the above.
- Imbuing trainee professionals with the concept of impeccable professional ethics.
- undertaking meaningful research and publications.
- coöperation and interaction with departments both within the School of Dentistry and in other Faculties, with a view to cross-fertilization of ideas, that may result in innovative research and enhanced treatment outcomes.
- heedfulness of the department’s rôle in contributing to, in maintaining and in promoting the standing and reputation of the Faculty of Dentistry, and of the University of Pretoria as a whole.
