This year proved to be a very prestigious and prolific one for the Pulmonology and Allergology Unit.
Prof Robin Green was awarded Academic Honorary Colours by the University of Pretoria, status as an ‘Established Researcher’ by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and his Doctor of Science degree for a thesis titled: Atopy and acquired immune deficiency – issues of control of two extremes of a spectrum of paediatric respiratory disorders with an immunological basis.
Several doctors excelled and two colleagues received top honours: Prof Refiloe Masekela received her PhD and Dr Omolemo Kitchin was awarded the first prize at the annual Gala Award Ceremony for the best overall clinical publication. Well done!

Prof Refiloe Masekela was awarded her PhD for a thesis titled: Chronic inflammatory lung disease in human immunodeficiency virus-infected children. Epidemiological considerations, aetiological determinants and the efficacy of low dose erythromycin in bronchiectasis.
At the Gala Dinner and Awards Function of the University of Pretoria held on the 17th November 2012 Dr Omolemo Kitchin was awarded Best Publication: Runner Up for his paper:

2010 was a good year in Paediatric Pulmonology at the University of Pretoria.
Prof Refiloe Masekela continued with her PhD thesis titled ”Chronic inflammatory lung disease in children with human immunodeficiency virus infected children. Epidemiological considerations, aetiological determinants and the efficacy of low dose erythromycin in bronchiectasis.”
a) Presented abstract of the “Epidemiological considerations, demographic data and inflammatory determinants in children with HIV-related bronchiectasis” at the American Thoracic Society Meeting, New Orleans 2010 for which received and award for the best abstract for the MECOR and Fellow- in-Training Travel Awards.
b) Completed article titled” Demographic, environmental and inflammatory factors in children with human immunodeficiency virus-related bronchiectasis.” Submitted to Pediatric Pulmonology Journal

Dr Omolemo Kitchin graduated as a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians – A great honour. Read the article in Health Science Matters - June 2011, issue 4.
He concluded research work on ‘Cost of pneumonia in children’ and this has been submitted for publication.
Dr Teshni Moodley had a publication: ‘Moodley T, Masekela R, Kitchin O, Risenga S, Green RJ. Acute viral bronchiolitis. Aetiological and treatment implications in a population that may be HIV coinfected. S Afr J Epidemiol Infection 2010;25(2):5-8’
The Division published 15 articles during 2010 and had 4 Diploma Allergology graduates and two Certificate in Paediatric Pulmonology (Dr Carla Els and Dr Debbie White) graduates.
Robin Green was awarded Fellowship of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology.
