On the 2nd March 2007 the Gauteng Premier, Mbhazima Shilowa, opened the Steve Biko Academic Hospital (then known as Pretoria Academic Hospital). With Prof Wittenberg at the helm of things Paediatrics was one of the first departments to occupy their offices.
The hospital was initially envisaged as a tertiary care facility, but quaternary services are also provided.
‘Steve Biko Academic Hospital continues to excel. The hospital scored the highest rating amongst Central hospitals in the country in the National Department of Health Office of Core Quality Standards audits.’(The MEC for Health, Hope Papo on the occasion of the 2013/14 Health Budget Vote Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Johannesburg).
