Veterinary and medical students team-up to help Laudium.

Posted on March 15, 2019

On the 15th of March 2019, the OPVSC teamed up with Pulse and Dentistry school from the Faculty of Health Sciences to help the community of Laudium in Pretoria West. With the help of some of Onderstepoort's clubs and societies, the Cat Interest Group, IVSA and Vetsco, the day was a resounding success.

The Maveric project incorporates the idea of One Health by helping both humans and animals in a synergystic way. Durng this particular project, Rabies vaccinations were conducted in order to protect both humans and animals against this incurable disease. By vaccinating animals against this incurable disease, one creates a barrier agaisnt it being spread in a community. Rabies is most commonly spread by dog bites in South Africa, so it is imperative that people know how to recognise the signs of rabies and how to prevent dog bites

Knowledge and education is gem that can't be stolen, and hence the Maveric project centers around education to both the human and veterinary aspect of life. The medical and dentistry students educated the community on general health care, teeth cleaning and handed out hampers with tooth brushes and toothpaste. Veterinary students conducted facepainting and taught children about the correct way to look after their pets using colouring in exercises.

Thank you to all who took part in this amazing initiative. We will see you all later in the year!
