The MAVERIC (Medical and Veterinary Rural Integration and Collaboration) Project was first created by a club at Onderstepoort known as IVSA (International Veterinary Students’ Association). The MAVERIC Project is based on the One Health concept, meaning that multiple disciplines convene in order to uplift a community. These disciplines include the Medical Students and the newly joined Dentist students from Prinshof campus. Since its birth, it has evolved into a project which involves many clubs and societies from Onderstepoort – particularly, IVSA, the Cat Interest Group (CIG), VETSCo and the Onderstepoort Paraveterinary and Veterinary Student Committee (OPVSC) are the main groups collaborating this year for the veterinary side.
MAVERIC aims to work over a relative long-term with a particular community of interest, in order to understand the dynamics of the community, when it comes to inter-personal and animal-human interactions. With this understanding, we try to uplift the animals and people of the community. Another objective of MAVERIC is to bring students of different campuses together, uniting them to achieve one common goal.
